Tahiti is the largest of 118 islands and atolls that make up French Polynesia in the South Pacific. There are actually two joined islands. The larger one is Tahiti-Nui. The smaller one is Tahiti-Iti. The capital in Papeete at the North of Tahiti-Nui. Faa’a International Airport (PPT) is the arrival and departure point for most visitors. The sister isle Moorea has a number of popular resorts and is 15km West of Tahiti by boat.
We stayed at the InterContinental Resort Tahiti for five nights Wednesday 25 October to Monday 30 October. It is an extensive resort a few kilometers from Papeete.
The resort has a lagoon that has nets separating it from other lagoons and the ocean. The lagoon is used to rehabilitate sea turtles that have been caught in nets or hit by boats. There are infant turtles in separate netted areas in the lagoon. There were two adult turtles recovering from shell damage.
We saw some spectacular sunsets over the resort and the ocean. We didn’t see any sunrises as there was a mountain in the way!
